Historical help

To the editor:

For the past several weeks there has been an ongoing debate concerning the fate of the Watkins Museum and its director Steve Jansen. We the staff of Vinland Elementary School USD 348 in Baldwin City would like to express our support and appreciation for Mr. Jansen.

On several occasions, Mr. Jansen has given his time and expertise to enhance the educational opportunities for our students. He has been a valued contributor to the commitment of our school in perpetuating an awareness of the rich historical heritage of the Vinland Valley area and community.

For the past three years we have held a Founders’ Day in honor of Vinland’s rich history. Mr. Jansen has come to our school to prepare students for a debate on the hero/villain, John Brown. He has given lectures at our Founder’s Day celebration about the contributions of the railroad, Native Americans, how barns played a role in history and the economic significance of the area. He has provided enriching historical tours of downtown Lawrence to classes, visited with students about Dr. James Naismith, and in general, provided an invaluable resource for our school and community.

Steve Jansen has been a great friend to us, and losing him as the director of the Watkins Museum would, in our estimation, be a disservice to our community as well as Douglas County. Instead of reducing the man’s salary, you ought to double it.

Bill Scott and the Vinland

Elementary staff,
