Age bias?
To the editor:
In the Sept. 16 edition, in the article “Museum’s Fate Hangs in Plan for Makeover,” I was dismayed to read Marnie Argersinger’s statement that the Watkins Community Museum “can get a new, young person to take that job…” Is Ms. Argersinger aware that that is age discrimination? Showing a hiring preference based on age is against the law, period.
Based on Friday’s article about the county commission’s insistence on board changes, I believe one of the changes should be barring Ms. Argersinger from participation in any personnel decisions whatsoever. It seems the situation at the museum is contentious enough without throwing discrimination into the mix. Through what may have been an unintentional or careless slip, she clearly displayed an age prejudice that is as unacceptable as racial, religious or gender prejudice.
