Bus shelter proposal sent for further study

The Lawrence City Commission didn’t act Tuesday night on a proposed ordinance to keep people who aren’t bus passengers from using shelters and benches at city bus stops.

Instead, they’re sending it to the Public Transit Advisory Commission for review.

Under the language of the ordinance, people who don’t plan to ride the bus would be forbidden to “use, sit, lie, lean against or seek the protection or comfort of the Lawrence Transit System benches and shelters.” Violators would be fined $10.

Critics said the ordinance would discriminate against homeless persons who use such benches as a resting place.

The transit committee meets next at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22.
