Lawrence district nets Safe Schools grant

The Lawrence school district has been awarded a $2.8 million grant through the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative.

The initiative is a collaboration among the U.S. departments of education, health and human services, and justice. It is designed to provide students, schools and communities the benefit of enhanced comprehensive educational, mental health, social service, law enforcement and juvenile justice system services that can promote healthy childhood development and prevent violence and alcohol and other drug use.

U.S. senators Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts announced the grant on Tuesday. However, Supt. Randy Weseman declined comment on the grants because he had not yet received official notification.

Legion post seeking new members

The recently revived Tonganoxie American Legion Post is still looking for new members.

Post 41 meets at 7:30 p.m. today at the Tonganoxie Masonic Hall, 311 S. Delaware.

Since Tonganoxie Vietnam veteran Jim Rogers this summer took an interest in resuscitating the inactive post, its membership has tripled, from 13 original members to 39.

The post’s goal is to recruit 52 members, Rogers said.

Post members have formed a committee to work on fund raisers and projects and recently participated in the American Legion 9-11 Project.

All eligible veterans are welcome at tonight’s meeting.
