Trauma experts offer keys to coping on 9-11

The key to coping with the first anniversary of Sept. 11 is balancing images with information and fear with friendship, mental health experts recently advised.

Honor the nation’s loss, but remain informed about ongoing dangers and recognize individual stress, said Jon Allen, a senior psychologist with Topeka’s Menninger Clinic.

“Watching the planes crash into the buildings over and over again or hearing the survivors and rescuers recount their losses can bring any one of us to a point of being unduly distressed,” he said.

Mental health experts also advised the public to get plenty of sleep and spend time with loved ones in the days surrounding the anniversary.

Speaking openly about the tragedy is wise, said Menninger’s Lisa Lewis, but those who continue to experience intrusive thoughts should seek professional help.
