Rural water line break leads to boil order

A boil order remains in effect for Rural Water District No. 4 in southeast Douglas County. The order was issued after one of the district’s main pipelines ruptured Sunday. Workers repaired the break Monday.

Phyllis Stone, a district clerk in Vinland, said a five-inch underground line broke Sunday along Douglas County Road North 1000, between 1600 and 1700 roads.

“It broke basically because the ground is so dry and is shifting and causing pipes to move,” Stone said.

Stone said there was no real concern about contamination, but the boil order was issued as a precaution while the repair is being made. The boil order is expected to remain in effect until Wednesday.

The water district serves about 1,000 rural residents in southeast Douglas County between Lawrence, Eudora, Vinland and Baldwin.
