FSHS Player of week: Matt Berner

Class: Senior

HT: 5-11. WT: 190.

Position: QB

The game: Berner was on during the Firebirds’ 31-28 win against Shawnee Mission Northwest Friday at Haskell Stadium. He completed 15 of 24 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner with 2:44 left in the fourth quarter. Berner eluded the rush, scrambled to his right and was drilled by a Cougar defender, but completed the throw to junior Dain Dillingham, who went 69 yards for the score.

Comment: “He did an outstanding job of throwing the ball, making the correct reads and getting the ball to the correct receiver,” FSHS coach Bob Lisher said.

“(The receivers) dropped a few and he forced a couple, but overall I would say that was pretty doggone good performance by our quarterback. I was pretty impressed.”

Honorable mention: Senior RB/LB David Allen (21 carries for 96 yards, most defensive points) and junior WR/LB Dain Dillingham (three receptions for 89 yards, including game-winning TD).
