Ask voters

To the editor:

The newest discussion on roundabouts centers on the intersection at 19th Street and Barker Avenue. In a letter to the editor, Erik and LeaMarie Herron, referring to your editorial of Aug. 15, state, “The statement attributed to the city that neighbors ‘prefer roundabouts’ inaccurately reflects our preferences.”

I recently received a letter from the city for comment on a neighbor’s desire to put up a yard tool shed close to the property line, which would bother no one. I have never received any such request for input from the city concerning the replacement sidewalk which was recently installed between Park Hill Terrace and Broken Arrow Park on Louisiana Street. I have frequently walked this route over the years and must say I consider the old sidewalk much safer, especially on Louisiana Street (my opening to the world) or proposed roundabouts on Louisiana Street. Isn’t it time to conduct a complete canvass of the citizens of Lawrence to see whether or not they actually want their tax money spent on traffic hazards and “dime-sized” roundabouts?

Vincent U. Muirhead,
