Couple give $250,000 for KU law professorship

A former Overland Park legislator and current member of the Kansas Board of Regents has pledged $250,000 to Kansas University, officials announced Thursday.

The gift from Dick Bond and his wife, Sue, will establish a professorship in public policy at the KU School of Law. The gift included $54,000 in securities, with the remainder as part of the couple’s estate.

Bond, a 1957 political science graduate and 1960 law school graduate, served 1986-2001 in the state Senate, including four years as president. Gov. Bill Graves this summer appointed Bond to the Board of Regents.

Bond is a member of the Law Campaign Committee for KU First, the $500 million fund-raising campaign under way with the KU Endowment Association. He received the School of Law’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001 and KU’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001.

Sue Bond is a 1958 KU graduate in medical technology.

Weather

Heat forces early release at Eudora Middle School

Eudora Because of expected hot weather, Eudora Middle School will dismiss students early this afternoon, school officials announced Thursday.

Students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. today from the school. The middle school is the only one in the Eudora district that doesn’t have air conditioning throughout its building.

Ross Janssen, 6News meteorologist, predicts a high of 97 degrees for today. But the humidity will make it feel about 105, Janssen said.

Although the middle school will dismiss students early, bus routes will remain on a normal schedule. So middle school students riding the bus have been asked to find another way to get home.

A study hall will be provided in an air-conditioned portion of the building until the regular dismissal time for students who are unable to find alternate transportation.
