Free State students conduct mock vote

If students at Free State High School are any measure, Kathleen Sebelius can relax.

The Democratic nominee for Kansas governor crushed her main rival, Republican Tim Shallenburger, in a mock election conducted Wednesday in the high school’s cafeteria.

“Shallenburger hasn’t made solid promises,” Free State senior Andy Sneegas said.

Plenty of his classmates agreed.

Sebelius received 72 percent of the vote at Free State, with Shallenburger capturing 22 percent. Libertarian Dennis Hawver and Ted Pettibone of the Reform Party each captured 3 percent.

Sneegas, who is 18 years old and intends to vote officially for the first time on Nov. 5, said he threw his support behind Sebelius because of her strong support for public education.

Nathan Markham, a 17-year-old senior at Free State, said Shallenburger shouldn’t be so easily dismissed by his peers.

“I’ve heard bad things about Sebelius’ work as insurance commissioner in Kansas,” he said.

Amanda Strickler-Hut, 17, cast her ballot for a mock election at Free State High School. Government classes staged their own election Wednesday with plans to compare results to the Nov. 5 outcomes.

Sebelius is the state insurance commissioner. Shallenburger is state treasurer. Both are former Kansas House members.

The mock election was a project of an advanced politics class at Free State taught by Chuck Tracy.

“We don’t expect the results to be indicative of the rest of Kansas, but we’ll be interested in seeing how close they match the Douglas County numbers,” Tracy said.
