Election issue
To the editor:
I am appalled that the Lawrence school board is willing to spend an as yet undetermined amount of dollars on turning East Heights Elementary School into an early child center. The current building will not, as it sits, house an early childhood center.
The students at East Heights have waited a long time to have upgrades to this building. We did however get some minor upgrades two years ago. We got new carpet, windows and new lighting. As a longtime East Heights parent, I am puzzled by the current as well as past school boards ignoring East Heights. If the school board, past and present, would have put dollars into East Heights, we would not need $5.6 million worth of work now.
I have been very involved in East Heights School. Recently, East Heights School received a $26,000 grant from Community Development for new playground equipment. The city thought it appropriate to help revitalize our East Heights community. Why doesn’t the school board ? Why is it always easier for the school board to forget us? I was a part of the Save Our Schools campaign six years ago. The school board didn’t listen then and the present school board doesn’t seem to be listening now. I beg to differ with Mr. Morgan: This is an election issue.
