Lawrence murderer up for parole

A man convicted in a 1987 stabbing death during a fight at an East Lawrence mobile home soon will be up for parole.

Gregory H. Thomas, was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for second-degree murder in the death of Stephan R. Howell, 24, rural Lawrence.

Thomas, 28 at the time of the incident, was attending a party at the mobile home when a fight broke out. He also was convicted of aggravated battery for injuring a second person in the fight.

Thomas is being held in the Lansing Correctional Facility.

The Kansas Parole Board is conducting public comment sessions about state prisoners who will have parole hearings next month. Others from Douglas County who will be up for parole are:

Cyrus Free, attempted aggravated battery and indecent liberties with a child, held in the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

Willie Dotson, rape and aggravated sodomy, held in Lansing.

Eugene T. Cosey Jr., forgery and terroristic threat, and from Crawford County, felony theft, held in Norton Correctional Facility.

Anyone who can’t attend a hearing can write their opinions about an individual’s parole and send it to Kansas Parole Board, Landon State Office Building, 900 S.W. Jackson St., room 452, Topeka, 66612-1220.

Hearings will be at the following locations:

8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Landon State Office Building, first floor, room 106 A, 900 S.W. Jackson St., Topeka.

9 a.m. to noon Monday, City Hall, 701 N. Seventh St., Kansas City, Kan.
