Parade comes home to Baker

? Baker University is stepping up its Homecoming celebration this weekend with a parade.

University officials brought back the parade after a 30-year absence. It will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and travel from Eighth and Chapel south to High Street, then turn to end at Sixth and High streets. It will feature floats, the Baker band and Homecoming royalty.

The parade is one of the highlights surrounding the Homecoming game against MidAmerica Nazarene, which has a 2 p.m. kickoff.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m. at Harter Union.

Inductees will be:

l George LaFrance, a 1987 graduate and two-time most valuable player in the Arena Football League. As a wide receiver, he helped lead Baker to its first-ever NAIA Division II National Championship football game in 1986, then played for the Detroit Drive in the arena league. He is now general manager of the San Diego Riptide.

l Cecil Pryor, a 1929 graduate who earned letters in football and track. He coached track at Fredonia High School until he died in 1967.

l Doris Peterson, a professor of physical education and director of women’s athletics at Baker from 1954 to 1974.

l Charles Mansfield, a 1961 graduate who was a four-year letterman in football and all-conference player at Baker and a two-year letterman in basketball. He was head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Baker from 1966 to 1975.
