FSHS soccer downed 3-1

? Free State High’s boys soccer team closed its regular season Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to Shawnee Mission Northwest at Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex.

The Firebirds, who finished 8-6-2, will play host to a regional game at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday against a to-be-determined opponent. Free State either will be the No. 3 seed or No. 4 seed depending on the outcome of Topeka High’s final two games.

“We battled,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said of the loss to the Cougars. “We were down 1-0 at the half. They got another goal about 10 minutes into the second half. In the last 25 minutes we hit the crossbar once and just missed on another one over the top of the crossbar.

“We had chances, but didn’t convert. We played OK. They’re better than us, but we did OK.”

Pendleton cited Paul Becker, Bryan Spangler and Andrew Huffman for their play.
