Wet, cooler weather ahead for Lawrence

October 22, 2002

Lawrence might get some rain Tuesday night out of a cold front that's bringing wintry weather into Kansas.

But don't expect any white stuff in the Lawrence area or in northeast Kansas, says Ross Janssen, 6News meteorologist.

"I really don't think the way things look right now that we'll get any kind of snow out of this system," Janssen said Tuesday afternoon."We've had a few sprinkles this afternoon, but our chances for rain will increase tonight," he said. "It's just a cold rain for us."

His forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of light rain Tuesday night, with occasional showers on Wednesday.

The chances for rain increase on Wednesday and by Wednesday night, there's an 80 percent chance of rain, he said. The overnight low will drop into the lower 40s, with the high on Wednesday reaching only 47.

"There's a winter storm watch for northwestern Kansas," Janssen said.

Rain mixed with snow is being forecast for an area west of a diagonal line from Concordia (about 80 miles northwest of Lawrence) to Russell to Dodge City, he said.

The National Weather Service predicts that by late Wednesday, there could be minor accumulations of snow over parts of north central Kansas, generally west of U.S. Highway 81.

The chance for rain and snow continues into Thursday in central and western Kansas.
