KU names Ex.C.E.L. winners

Two Kansas University students have been selected for KU’s annual Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership (Ex.C.E.L.) awards.

The winners Erin Michaelis, Hays senior, and Irakli Mirzashvili, Ness City junior were honored Saturday during the homecoming football game against Colorado.

Michaelis is a member of four national honor societies. She holds executive offices in her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, the KU Panhellenic Assn. and the Center for Community Outreach. Her volunteer work includes time at Headquarters Counseling Center.

Mirzashvili serves as president of the International Student Ambassador Program and vice president of the International Student Assn. A native of the Republic of Georgia, he has organized activities, such as the Festival of Nations, that celebrate and promote cultural awareness.

The awards are given annually by Student Union Activities and the Board of Class Officers. Winners are selected based on leadership, communication skills, involvement in the KU community, academic scholarship and ability to work with a variety of students and organizations.

Slide show, nature walk on Sierra club agenda

The Wakarusa Group of the Sierra Club Kansas Chapter will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

Frank Norman will show a slide show of his summer 2002 backpacking trip in the River-of-No-Return Wilderness in Idaho, the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states.

The club is also sponsoring a guided tour of the Fitch Natural History Reservation and Nelson Environmental Study Area north of Lawrence. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Lawrence Visitor Center, 402 N. Second. Biologist Galen Pittman will lead a walk of the nature trail, explain the history of the ecological reserves and introduce participants to the area’s plants, birds, and wildlife.

Faculty recital to include BU, ESU vocalists, musicians

Baldwin Two faculty members in the Baker University department of music will perform alongside guest artists Thursday evening at a faculty recital.

Susan Buehler, soprano, and Trilla Lyerla, pianist, will perform in conjunction with Ken Prewitt, a tenor who teaches at Emporia State University, and Marie Miller, a pianist who also works at Emporia State.

The recital, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in McKibbin Recital Hall, is free and open to the public.

The program will include works by musicians such as Beethoven, Handel and Mozart.

Buehler teaches voice, vocal pedagogy, accompanying and diction at Baker and is director of the university’s Artist & Lecture Series. Lyerla teaches piano, piano pedagogy, music theory, world music and is coordinator of the Baker University Prep School for young music students.

Workshop to teach about growing herbs

Oskaloosa The Great Plains Herb Growers Assn. will have a workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 26 at Vajra Herb Farm, 14370 54th St., Oskaloosa.

Botanist and herb grower Steve Moring will speak.

The workshop will address trends of the herb market, growing techniques, choosing herbs, fall preparations, seeding techniques, market research, and organic certification and practice.

Registration fee is $60 until Friday, and $75 afterward, limited to the first 35 registrants.
