Firebirds should thrive; Lions could surprise

The seeding meeting for today’s 6A girls’ tennis regional might have a few surprises, but there’s one certainty: Free State High will have the players to beat.

Firebird senior Emily Wang, 24-2, is the defending state champ and the probable No. 1 seed. FSHS senior doubles tandem Emily Loewen and Lacey Luina are an equally impressive 23-2, and probably deserve the other top seed when play begins at 9 a.m. today at Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

Even if they’re not top seeds, they’ll be playing like they are.

Wang hasn’t lost to a 6A player this season, and Loewen and Luina showed their resolve at last Monday’s Sunflower League tournament. Tied 1-1 with Shawnee Mission East, the two asserted themselves and cruised in the third set for the title.

“Even though they dropped that second set, they were in control that whole match,” FSHS coach Jon Renberger said.

“It’s going to be tough for a team to beat them two out of three games.”

One team that has a chance is Lawrence High seniors Abby and Sara Olson. They lost in three sets to SM East, but finished third at league. For them to qualify for state, LHS coach Dick Wedel said they’d have to be more aggressive at the net.

The Lions’ other duo, Sydney Lartigue and Becca Fritzel, played well at No. 2 doubles last Monday, but should have their work cut out today. Still, Wedel thinks each team has an excellent chance at qualifying.

“They have a really good shot,” he said. They’re going to have to play for it because they won’t get seeded, but they can do it.”
