Free State tennis squad gets abbreviated tune-up

Free State High was supposed to make up a home tennis quadrangular on Thursday.

But only one other team showed, so the Firebirds had to settle for a dual.

Regardless, Free State got some good practice against Blue Valley Northwest heading into Monday’s regionals.

Shawnee Mission East and Overland Park Aquinas were originally scheduled to take part at the tournament at Free State, but Firebird coach Jon Renberger said each school chose not to attend the matches because of injuries and a mounting amount of missed class time.

The absent schools’ No. 1 singles players were probably relieved not to face Firebird senior Emily Wang, who quickly displaced Blue Valley’s Amy Kaufmann, 8-0.

Wang improved her season record to 24-2.

Kaufmann got revenge on Free State’s Rachel Koch, winning 8-4 in the day’s other singles match.

In No. 1 doubles, Free State’s tandem of Emily Loewen and Lacey Luina rolled again, slaughtering Summer Shiflett and Stacey Dowery, 6-0, 6-3. The Firebirds’ pair improved their season record to 23-2.

Renberger said he was confident his number-one combination could make a good showing at next week’s event.

“Loewen and Luina earned an impressive win over a very good team,” he said. “And the best-two-of-three set format gives them more experience heading into regionals on Monday.”
