To the editor:

I have seen many important school board decisions over the years. The method used to come to the important decision to close schools in Lawrence is unique this time. The public had to bring its case to consulting firm (DLR) officials. In the past, the elected officials had to face the electorate and be held directly accountable for their votes on the schools. How can a firm that is reimbursed, according to the Journal-World, through a contingency basis and won’t earn a substantial paycheck unless the bond issue passes listen to the electorate and make an objective decision that is best for Lawrence?

I have looked at some of the plans the DLR firm has come up with and they don’t address possible use for the schools that are closed. We can do better for Lawrence than any consultant can recommend to us.
