KU book contest to reward black high school students

Kansas University has announced the rules for its annual book-review contest, in conjunction with the 17th Black Leadership Symposium Oct. 31.

Five black high school students will receive $100 awards for reviewing one of six books. Reviews are due to KU’s Equal Opportunity Office, 313 Strong Hall, Lawrence 66045, by Oct. 14.

Eligible books for freshmen and sophomores are “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” by Douglass; “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years” by Sarah and Elizabeth Delany with Amy Hill Hearth; and “Not Without Laughter” by Langston Hughes.

Books for juniors and seniors are “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” by Ernest Gaines; “Up from Slavery” by Booker T. Washington; “The Souls of Black Folk” by W.E.B. DuBois; and “The Big Sea” by Langston Hughes.

Keynote speaker will be Delano Lewis, a former U.S. ambassador to South Africa and KU alumnus. For more information, call KU Continuing Education at 864-KUCE.
