Lecompton, county rule out ban

? Douglas County commissioners and members of the Lecompton City Council support a plan that would ban sales and use of stand-alone rockets, sparklers and other forms of fireworks as proposed by fireworks vendors.

And they’re counting on Lawrence city commissioners to go along with the proposal from the Douglas County Fireworks Assn., instead of pushing for an outright ban.

“I’d be heartsick if they took this away from our children,” said Nancy Howard, a member of the Lecompton council.

Added Charles Jones, a county commissioner: “Maybe, hopefully, we’ll find some middle ground we all can stand on.”

County commissioners and Lecompton council members endorsed the plan during a joint meeting Wednesday.
