Dole calls Taff right man for right time in Congress

? Former Sen. Bob Dole offered his political wit and endorsement Monday morning to Republican Adam Taff’s campaign for Congress, calling the veteran Navy pilot the right man for the right time in Congress.

Dole said Taff’s experience flying over the Persian Gulf and his knowledge of biological and chemical weapons would serve the nation and the 3rd District well as the United States considers using military action against Iraq.

“He understands what we are dealing with in Iraq,” Dole told reporters later.

Unlike some Democrats who have been critical of Bush, Taff’s opponent, Rep. Dennis Moore, said the president was “right on track and he’s effectively making his case to the American people about the threat Saddam poses.”

“It is during dangerous times like these that Republicans, Democrats, and independents need to work together to protect our country and the American people,” Moore said.

Taff, who flew F/A-18 attack and fighter jets, is challenging the two-term Moore. Both Dole and Taff agreed Moore’s large war chest would make this a difficult campaign for the Republicans.

Dole encouraged volunteers to work 10 hours a week for Taff and to stay positive, focusing on why their man is better.

About 250 Taff supporters paid $50 for a breakfast event at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Kansas City. It was the second high-profile fund-raiser for the Taff campaign in as many weeks.

On Sept. 23, Vice President Dick Cheney paid a visit to rally support for Taff at a $250-per plate luncheon.

Dole, 79 and a native of Russell, was also expected to appear later Monday on behalf of Tim Shallenburger’s gubernatorial campaign, who faces Democrat Kathleen Sebelius in November.

Dole is still a powerful figure in the Republican Party and has made recent campaign visits for GOP candidates in Iowa and New Mexico.
