Pit-bull problem

To the editor:

This is in reference to the pit bull attack on Nov. 12.

I am outraged by all the negative publicity that the dog attack has received over the past couple of days. I have three dogs of my own, one of them happens to be a pit bull. I love and take very good care of my dogs; I trust my pit more with my son than I do my two other dogs. I do, however, feel very bad for the family who lost their dog in such a tragic way.

There are a couple of things that people don’t seem to realize. First, it’s not the dog; it’s the OWNER. Whether or not people want to admit this, Lawrence seems to have a problem with people fighting their dogs, which in most cases end up being pit bulls.

From what I have heard, people pay big money to watch these dogs fight. What kind of sick individual gets off by watching these dogs suffer? Then what do they do? Dump them somewhere out in the county for them to die? Why don’t we do something about people like that? I can tell you why, it’s easier to ban the dog.

So, in the meantime, while they are deciding whether or not to ban the breed, those of us responsible pit-bull owners, should we plan on saying our good-byes? Here is a couple of options:

1. Harsh penalties for people caught breeding/raising/training fight dogs as there is NO EXCUSE.

2. Give the animal control officers more authority. I know some of you have watched “Animal Precinct.”

3. Get rid of these pit fighters.

I would just like to let it be known that I don’t plan on getting rid of my dog. I will get insurance on him or whatever it takes.

Kristina Marshall,

Lawrence
