Light flurries expected Tuesday for travelers

Bundle up. And if you’re traveling for Thanksgiving, be wary of some snow along the way.

That’s the recommendation of Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist.

Kansas University students who live around the Lawrence area won’t have too much white stuff to deal with in the next few days.

For Monday, “clouds will increase during the day today and we should stay dry,” Makens said. Monday’s afternoon high temperature will barely reach the freezing mark of 32 degrees.

“Tonight, we’ll get down to 20 degrees, with mostly cloudy skies,” Makens said. “There’s a chance for flurries, especially towards commute time tomorrow. And light snow flurries during the day tomorrow could be expected, maybe just a dusting. I’m not expecting a huge major storm for tomorrow.”

Tuesday’s afternoon high will be 29 degrees, he said. On Wednesday, Lawrence area skies will be partly cloudy, but dry, with a high of 33.

And Thanksgiving day in the Lawrence area will have fair skies and a high of 41.

“So, it’s not a bad day, just cool, by about 10 degrees below average,” Makens said. “Then Friday and Saturday, we’ll have highs in the upper 40s. And toward Sunday and Monday of next week, we’ll have more cold air, so we’ll probably be back down into the 30s.”

For KU students planning to travel home for the holidays, Makens took a look at the forecasts for a few major cities:

  • Denver: If you’re driving out to the Denver area, you’ll run into some snow by Wednesday in eastern Colorado and continuing to the west into the mountains, he said.
  • Chicago: If you’re heading to the Windy City, you’ll find snow showers there Tuesday afternoon, lingering into Wednesday morning. But it should be dry on Thursday, with temperatures in the mid-30s and partly cloudy skies.
  • Dallas: Students arriving in Dallas on Tuesday could see a little rain, but Wednesday is supposed to be partly cloudy with highs in the 40s, Makens said.
  • St. Louis: If you’re driving to St. Louis on Tuesday, you could run into some snow. But travelers heading east on Wednesday, will find partly cloudy skies both Wednesday and Thursday.
