Monarch Watch seeks donations for program

Officials from Monarch Watch, the butterfly-counting organization based at Kansas University, are seeking donations to support their annual adopt-a-school program in Mexico.

Each January, Monarch Watch members deliver supplies to Mexico schools near the butterflies’ overwintering site.

So far, $3,000 has been collected to pay for transportation, storage and other costs. About $13,000 is needed.

Checks, payable to Monarch Fund, can be sent to Monarch Watch, Kansas University, 1200 Sunnyside Ave., Lawrence 66045. “Adopt a Classroom” should be included on the memo field.

Courts: Park robber sentenced

A Lawrence man was ordered to spend nearly two years in prison for his part in a park robbery in July.

Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone sentenced Malcolm Glover, 21, to 21 months in prison for criminal possession of a weapon. A 12-month sentence for misdemeanor theft will be served concurrently.

Glover was arrested after the July 16 robbery of two men in Edgewood Park in east Lawrence. Also charged in the case was Damien C. Lewis, 22, Lawrence. His case is pending.

Lewis also faces a capital murder charge in the deaths of Pete Wallace and Wyona Chandlee. The couple were found shot to death in their east Lawrence home a few days before the Edgewood Park robbery. Police said Glover was not involved in the killings.

Crime: Police investigating incidents at high schools

Lawrence Police were called Friday to both Lawrence high schools.

A Free State High School junior was taken into custody by a school resource officer after the student allegedly pushed a teacher to the ground.

The teacher was to have a doctor’s exam as a precaution, said Julie Boyle, district communications director.

She said police also were contacted by Lawrence High School officials to report that three sophomores were allegedly in possession of marijuana on school property. Police are investigating that incident.
