KU receives grant for groundwater project

Kansas University researchers have received a $158,000 grant to teach high school and community college students about groundwater.

The two-year grant, from the National Science Foundation, will go to a team of researchers at the Kansas Geological Survey and the Upward Bound Math Science Center in the KU School of Education.

Researchers will develop an interactive Web site to teach about the movement of groundwater and humans’ impact on surface water and groundwater. The site will feature role-playing exercises that focus on students solving simulated environmental problems, such as the movement of underground contaminants toward a water supply.

The prototype of the site will be used and evaluated during the KU Math Science Center Summer Institute classes at Kansas City Community College and high schools across Kansas, including Lawrence High School.
