Law enforcement reports

  • A tractor-trailer hauling 80 head of cattle overturned about 1:15 p.m. Thursday at 199th and Waverly streets near Gardner, Johnson County Sheriff’s Lt. Doug Baker said. About 60 head of cattle escaped and were rounded up during the next several hours, Baker said. The remaining 20 head of cattle were killed in the accident. Area farmers assisted s with the roundup. The driver was not seriously injured, Baker said. No other details were available.
  • A construction worker fell 14 feet into a trench shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday at the site of the addition being built to the Kansas University School of Engineering, 15th Street and Naismith Drive, the KU Public Safety Office said. The worker was identified as Rick Ramirez, 42, Topeka, an employee with Ferrell Construction Co. He suffered leg or foot injuries, KU officers said. He was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was in fair condition late Thursday night, a nursing supervisor said.

Joshua I. Walton, 20, remained in good condition Thursday at KU Med, Kansas City, Kan. He was injured Oct. 8 when his car collided head-on with a tractor-trailer on Kansas Highway 10.
