Journalists to discuss state issues on program

Priesthood accountability, the Kansas nursing home industry and the state budget debate will be examined on “Kansas Week,” a news program broadcast live at 8:30 p.m. today on public TV station KTWU Topeka, Sunflower Broadband Channel 11.

Scheduled to appear are:

  • Phillip Brownlee, opinion page editor of the Wichita Eagle.
  • Dave Seaton, publisher of the Winfield Daily Courier.
  • Greg Halling, managing editor of the Hutchinson News.
  • Dave Ranney, reporter at the Lawrence Journal-World.

District staff celebrate Education Week

Staff of Lawrence public schools today wrap up celebrations of American Education Week with an annual mixer.

The event, open to all district employees, is from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 2206 E. 23rd St. A disc jockey will play music from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Sponsored by Lawrence Education Assn., the event will offer participants food, drink and prizes.

LEA, which represents certified staff in labor negotiations with the district, will take donations for tickets. That money will be earmarked for the union’s scholarship fund. The annual scholarships are awarded to two high school seniors and one staff member.

Headquarters to offer help on Suicide Day

Headquarters Counseling Center will observe National Survivors of Suicide Day on Saturday.

Staff members will provide information about suicide prevention from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Ninth and Massachusetts streets.

Headquarters also offers a support group for any adult who has experienced the death of someone close by suicide. The next meeting is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 211 E. Eighth St., Suite C. The topic will be “Surviving the Holidays.”

Show to feature carving

Topeka ” The Kaw Valley Woodcarvers of Topeka are planning their 23rd annual Woodcarvers’ Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Holiday Inn Holidome, 605 S.W. Fairlawn Road, Topeka.

The show will feature a competition with 31 categories on Saturday, carving demonstrations and arts displays for viewing and sale both days, and a whittling contest Sunday evening.

Admission to the exhibition is $3 per person or $5 per couple. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.
