Not giving up

To the editor:

The residents of Brook Creek Neighborhood have not given up the battle against closing East Heights School.

At the East Heights Site Council meeting before the forum at West Junior High School, we were told East Heights was a great school and was working.

Schools Supt. Randy Weseman and school board member Scott Morgan went on to say that even if the voting public decided to keep the school open, the school board would close it.

The Brook Creek Neighborhood Assn. has no intention of giving up the fight. We are committed to keeping our neighborhood vital, and the main link to our vitality is our school.

Numbers from all over the country show that when you close a neighborhood school you disenfranchise children, property values plummet and the end of the neighborhood has begun. Shame on Weseman and Morgan for declaring we have no choice. They stated the city as a whole will be asked to make sacrifices, East Heights just has to make more. We are tired of making more sacrifices than the general public.

Studies show that children in low socioeconomic situations need local schools with small class sizes. Is the city ready to pick up the tab when these children reach high school age and beyond? These children and our neighborhood are worth fighting for, and we won’t give up.
