Horseback rider roaming country stops in city
A Lawrence-area couple provided a resting place Monday night for a man riding horseback across the United States.
Gene Glasscock, 68, stayed at the home of Mel and Alice Wren while his horses grazed in their pasture.
Glasscock began making his way in September to each capital in the lower 48 states. He has already visited Denver, Cheyenne, Wyo., Lincoln, Neb., and Topeka.
“I’ve got 8 percent done,” he said.
Glasscock rides 15 to 20 miles each day to raise money for the Philip Scholarship Fund, which pays for the education of Paraguay youths at Pensacola (Fla.) Christian College.
Donations can be sent to the fund, in care of the college at 250 Brent Lane, Pensacola FL, 32503.
Crime: Police investigate rape
Lawrence Police are investigating a 20-year-old Lawrence woman’s reported rape last week.
The woman told police she was raped sometime between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Thursday. The alleged incident occurred while the woman said she was incapacitated in a west Lawrence apartment, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.
The woman didn’t live at the apartment, and there was no forced entry.
Pattrick said police took the initial report from the woman about 9 p.m. Thursday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. They are working with the woman to develop information on a suspect.
Highway patrol: DJ’s truck reclaimed with help from listeners
Topeka :quot; A Topeka disc jockey learned the power of the airwaves Sunday night when his car was taken, only to be found by a station listener.
Joey Little, whose call name on KDDV V-100 is Joey Baggz, dropped his keys in the station’s parking lot. He said a boy found them and took the 1996 Ford Explorer.
When Little, 28, discovered the car’s disappearance, he called the police, his mom and then his station manager, who said, “Why don’t you just get on the air and ask the listeners if they’ve seen your truck?”
He did, and they had.
Several listeners called the station, and the truck was located when one man followed it to a location near Perry and called 911.
The truck was recovered near Tonganoxie within a few hours, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Community aid: United Way seeks help in campaign’s last week
In the last week of its $1.46 million campaign, the United Way of Douglas County is making a final push for donations to make its goal.
And while the campaign’s 16 Pacesetter companies – large employers that jump-start the campaign with their internal drives – have averaged pledge totals of about 20 percent more than last year, campaign co-chairman David Ambler said it was too early to claim victory.
“We need everyone in Douglas County to step up to the plate individually or through their place of employment,” he said.
The organization finances 29 social service agencies in Douglas County.
The campaign formally ends Thursday. Donations will be accepted after that date. They may be sent to 2518 Ridge Court, Lawrence 66046.
