County: Commissioners to tour expanded center

Douglas County commissioners meet today to get a close-up look at a $4 million expansion and renovation of the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center.

Commissioners intend to tour the building, 111 E. 11th, as part of their regular business meeting. Commissioners are scheduled to convene at 9 a.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass., before walking across the courtyard for a look at the construction work that lasted longer than a year.

Commissioner Charles Jones, who has overseen the project on behalf of his fellow commissioners, is lined up to lead the tour. No other business is scheduled for today’s meeting.

Wildlife: Audubon Society to hold annual birdseed sale

Jayhawk Audubon Society’s annual Winter Birdseed Sale will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vt. The sale also features suet cakes, bird feeders and books.

Proceeds will support the society’s ongoing educational and conservation projects.

Fund-raiser: Free State spirit squad to ‘Raise the Roof’ Dec. 3

Spirit Squad members at Free State High School will help build a house with their sixth annual “Raise the Roof” fund-raising event.

The celebration of Free State’s winter sports season is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 3. in the gym, 4700 Overland Drive.

For a minimum $1 donation, fans will be entertained by skits, scrimmages and player introductions. Donations also will be accepted to benefit a Habitat for Humanity family.

Those attending will be eligible for prizes, including a TV/VCR unit, tickets to Kansas University men’s basketball and restaurant gift certificates.

Habitat for Humanity: Musicians sing and swing to benefit charity

The Clyde Bysom Big Band performed ’30s and ’40s music during Swing Time and Coffee, a benefit for the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity.

The Sunday event, held at First United Methodist Church, also featured Don Mueller and ATTUNE, a vocal group accompanied by piano.
