Deer hunter falls 40 feet

An Overland Park man was in fair condition Sunday night at KU Med in Kansas City, Kan., after a deer-hunting accident near Clinton Lake.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said Patrick Baxter, 40, was bow-hunting about 7 a.m. Sunday in a wooded public area west of Clinton Lake when he fell 40 feet from a portable deer stand that was suspended from a tree. Baxter, who was alone and not wearing a safety harness, was able to summon help using his cell phone, Tate said.

Sheriff’s officers and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical personnel responded to the scene near County Roads 1023 and 350 East. Baxter was taken by air ambulance to KU Med. Tate said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
