Four injured in two-car crash on U.S. 24-40

Four people were injured when two cars collided Saturday night on U.S. Highway 24-40 at the entrance to the KOA Campgrounds north of Lawrence, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

Two victims were taken to KU Med, Kansas City, Kan., by air ambulance helicopters while two other victims were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical ambulances.

The accident occurred about 6:20 p.m. when a 1987 Nissan northbound on East 1473 Road drove in front of a 1991 Ford Mustang that was eastbound on 24-40, the Patrol report said.

The Nissan failed to yield to the Mustang and was struck on the driver’s side door, the report said.

The driver of the Nissan was identified as Samuel K. Crowley, 18, Topeka. He was taken by helicopter to KU Med and was in fair condition late Saturday night, a nursing supervisor said. A passenger, Billie J. Fuqua, 21, Ottawa, was taken to LMH and was in fair condition.

The driver of the Mustang was Eric J. Anton, 20, Tonganoxie, the Patrol report said. A passenger was Kimberly S. Leffert, 18, Leavenworth.

Police officers and firefighters look over the scene after four individuals were injured during a collision near the KOA Campgrounds off U.S. Highway 24-40. Two people involved in the wreck Saturday night were flown to KU Med by air ambulance.

Anton was taken to LMH and was still being examined in the emergency room late Saturday, but a nursing supervisor said he was in stable condition. Leffert was in fair condition at KU Med.

Law enforcement and medical crews called for LifeNet and Life Star helicopters to land next to the accident scene on KOA Campgrounds property. East 1473 leads to the campground.

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers and Lawrence Police blocked off a stretch of Highway 24-40 for more than an hour while the accident was investigated by the Highway Patrol.

None of the victims was wearing a seat belt.
