Illiterate fans

To the editor:

Normally, I would not consider writing to the Journal-World. However, the individuals illegally parking last night (Tuesday, Nov. 12) for the KU basketball game were not KU students, and thus unlikely to read of this in the student newspaper.

Nearly every parking lot on the south side of the KU campus is given over to basketball patrons. There is one place for students and faculty to go, and that lot is clearly marked, with signs on roadblocks at every entrance: “Academic use only.”

Why, then, must basketball patrons park there? Perhaps you didn’t realize that many of us who actually pay to attend school here have exams and other commitments that require us to be on campus at night, and thus require a place to park. Perhaps you really didn’t see the large roadblocks with signs on them instructing you to park elsewhere.

Perhaps, as I suggested before, you truly are illiterate, and thus innocent.

More likely, however, you simply don’t care.

I would like you to take the time (it only requires a few seconds) to consider that there might be a reason for leaving one lot reserved for academic use. I know the allure of free parking is hard to pass up, but it would be best, in this so-called Christian society we live in, to shell out a couple of dollars for parking and show some consideration for your fellow man.

Lastly, if anyone you know is woefully illiterate and thus parks in the lot set aside for university use, please read them this letter, and ask them, nicely, to learn how to read the signs.

Mary Long,

Lawrence
