To the editor:
We attended the 127th annual meeting of the Kansas State Historical Society this week to help honor several friends from this area who have been elected to positions of leadership.
All are well known for their commitment to this county and Kansas: Mike Hoeflich of Lecompton is the society's president; and, from Lawrence, Bill Tsutsui is vice president; Glee Smith is a member of the executive committee; and W. Stitt Robinson, himself a former president of the Society, is a member of the board of directors. Our hats are off to them all!
We were reminded that the society, whose founding was the work of the newspaper editors of Kansas, is facing dire times because of the state's financial crisis. Its talented and dedicated staff work closely with many others across the state, including the staff in the Kansas Collection at KU's Spencer Research Library. They give particular attention to the elementary and secondary schools to help teachers work with our children to understand and value our Kansas heritage.
We care about and contribute to many organizations in this community and state, but take special pride in helping the Kansas State Historical Society. We are sending a special gift to the society to honor the four fine people from Douglas County who have been entrusted with a part in its leadership. We also are contacting local legislators to ask them " as they look at all of education " to remember the importance of the society. We urge all who care about education and Kansas history to do the same!
