Still no plan?
To the editor:
The Journal-World was taken to task Nov. 7 by a reader for having the nerve to endorse a candidate whom that particular reader didn’t like. Never mind that it was the 11th hour when most people had already decided whom they were going to vote for anyway. As I read it, it appeared the reason the J-W endorsed Tim Shallenburger in the governor’s race was that he seemed “better prepared to work with the Legislature to deal with the state’s difficult financial problems.” He actually had a plan for dealing with the state’s budget woes, including changing the way education is funded to allow more local control.
Gov.-elect Kathleen Sebelius supports the current one-size-fits-all approach to education, which actually hurts larger districts like Lawrence. I find it interesting that she “doesn’t mind” letting outgoing Gov. Graves make the $255 million in budget cuts deemed necessary before she takes office. It seems like she still doesn’t have a plan.
