How to devein shrimp

The black vein along the back of a shrimp is its intestinal tract, which can impart a bitter taste and gritty texture if not removed, according to the Chicago Tribune.

To devein shelled shrimp, use a paring knife to make a shallow cut along the back of the shrimp. Pull the vein out with the tip of the knife; you also can rinse the shrimp under cold water. Pat dry with paper towels.

Winter squash such as butternut, acorn, Hubbard and pumpkin are distinguished from summer squash by their hard seeds and tough shells, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Cut a 2-to-3-pound winter squash in half; scoop out the seeds.Roast, cut-side down, on an oiled baking pan in a 400-degree oven for about 40 minutes to an hour, depending on size. Peel if desired.
