Save Centennial

To the editor:

A J-W report on an open forum left out the middle one of my three major statements regarding the Lawrence schools controversy. I do object to closing any schools; I do object to tearing down only to rebuild elsewhere. I also clearly stated that I do not object to paying more taxes so that additional schools can be built.

Centennial Elementary School is a single-story building on a spacious 5-acre site (much larger than originally represented to/by those considering our options). As such it is easy to expand; fire safety and handicapped issues are low. The large site can easily accommodate expanded parking, safe drop-off, a larger building, and expanded play and green areas. Young children need free time outdoors. My fear is that some in the community feel the space is being wasted, and could be put to better use for activities to entertain parents like LHS football or baseball. The community should preserve and upgrade Centennial School.
