Historical gifts

To the editor:

We all have gifts ” such varied gifts as teaching, parenting, organizing, homemaking, as well as gifts of artistry, imagination and business. Steven Jansen is gifted in many ways; one of his major gifts is the ability to make Douglas County history come alive. He has made this happen for thousands of people. Thank you, Steve. (I know of at least one family who aspired to move here after one walking tour with Steve.)

Unfortunately, Steve’s gifts did not include bringing people of diverse views together. That job now belongs to others in the community. It is our collective history; it seems that we should now want to honor our forefathers and foremothers (and Steve) by continuing to preserve this rich history at the Watkins Museum. Do you know of another community that was founded on a principle?

You may easily become a member of the Douglas County Historical Society by making a donation. If you hurry you could attend the annual meeting on Nov. 13 by calling the museum (841-4109) to make a reservation. Perhaps one of your gifts can be that of helping to preserve our wonderful history.
