Salina voters uphold ban on smoking in restaurants

A ban on smoking in one city’s restaurants survived a challenge Tuesday.

Salina’s ban on smoking in restaurants between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily came under attack as soon as the Salina City Commission passed the ordinance on a 3-2 vote in May.

Faced with a petition drive by opponents, the commission unanimously agreed to put the issue on the November ballot and delayed the ban’s effective date to early December.

With 86 percent of precincts reporting, the smoking ban was being approved by nearly 57 percent of the vote.
