Kids Voting poll supplies to be distributed today

Supplies for Kids Voting poll volunteers will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. today at 612 N.H.

Through the Kids Voting program, children of all ages can go to the polls Tuesday with a parent or guardian to “vote” on the same issues and candidates as adults.

Votes will be tallied from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kids Voting election headquarters in the commons area of Lawrence High School, 1901 La.

The school district, Roger Hill Volunteer Center and the Journal-World are primary sponsors of Kids Voting in Douglas County.

Now in its 10th year, the program is designed to encourage enthusiasm in democracy and boost future voter turnout.

Capitol sculpture: Statehouse dome statue to be dedicated Monday

Topeka The Ad Astra statue now on the Capitol dome will be dedicated during a ceremony Monday.

Participating in the 11 a.m. ceremony will be Gov. Bill Graves, Salina artist Richard Bergen who sculpted the 22-foot likeness of a Kansa Indian and the Capitol Dome Sculpture Volunteers.

The ceremony will be on the Ad Astra Plaza at the southwest Capitol grounds and will include a traditional American Indian blessing for the statue. If the weather is bad the ceremony will be moved inside.

The statue was placed atop the dome last month.

Community: Bert Nash benefit raises $25,000 for trust fund

An Oct. 9 benefit for Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center raised $25,000 for its Endowment Trust Fund, officials said.

The benefit at the Lawrence Holidome, called “An Evening With Max and Friends,” featured Max Falkenstien, creator of the Kansas University Sports Network and guest of honor. Fellow KU sports broadcaster Bob Davis was the master of ceremonies.

Others participating in the event were KU men’s basketball coach Roy Williams, former KU football coach and player Don Fambrough, and Don Green, KU faculty representative to the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA.
