Ryun hopes to retain spot in new 2nd district
Topeka ? With the ink still wet on new congressional district boundaries, U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun filed for re-election Wednesday.
Ryun, seeking his fourth two-year term, filed paperwork with the Secretary of State’s Office and paid $1,451 in fees. He said he was pleased the 2nd District still contained Forts Leavenworth and Riley.
He said he was disappointed that Junction City was moved to the 1st District, but Ryun said he did not mind that he picked up a portion of the Lawrence. The city and how to treat Kansas University were sticking points for legislators.
Still, Ryun said it would benefit the university and military communities to have more than one voice advocating for them in Washington.
No other Republicans were expected to challenge Ryun, while state Democratic Chairman Tom Sawyer said his party was still looking for a candidate. The filing deadline is June 24.
Legislators completed work on the lines for the state’s four congressional districts on May 17, after more than a year of contentious drawing and redrawing proposals. Gov. Bill Graves has until Sunday to sign the map.
If he vetoes the map, the U.S. District Court for Kansas would be charged with drawing the districts to conform with shifts in population as indicated by the 2000 census.
