Lions rule all-league squads

Lawrence High’s baseball team was rewarded for its Sunflower League championship season by having nine players named to All-Sunflower League teams.

Senior outfielder Mike Morrell was selected as the league’s player of the year.

“I think it says we have a lot of talent,” third-year LHS coach David Petry said, “and the other coaches felt that way too.”

Petry, who has led the Lions (16-6 overall, 9-1 league) to three straight Class 6A state tournaments, was tapped coach of the year by his colleagues.

“It’s obviously a big honor,” he said. “When you have nine kids on these teams, it just shows that those kids basically won it for me.”

The Lions’ first-team selections were pitchers Taylor Martin and Aaron Madill, and outfielder Mike Morrell. The second team included outfielders Rob Scott and Derek Bailey, and third baseman Tommy Mangino. Pitcher Ryan Rowland, catcher Troy Wingert and second baseman Kyle McManness all received honorable mention.

The city swept the three first-team pitcher selections with Free State High’s Eric Peterson also earning the final spot.

First baseman Cassidy Thompson was the Firebirds’ lone second-team selection, while catcher Jeremiah Gress, third baseman Kyle Unruh and shortstop Matt Berner all earned honorable mention.
