Domestic disturbance may have ended in stabbing

A domestic dispute between a man and a woman Wednesday morning may have resulted in a stabbing, Lawrence Police said.

About 10:15 a.m. officers responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 300 block of Northwood Lane, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. A 23-year-old woman who lived at the residence had been battered.

Police identified the suspected assailant only as a 20-year-old man known to the woman.

While investigating that incident, police received a call from Lawrence Memorial Hospital informing them of a stabbing victim being treated in the emergency room. Police learned the stabbing victim was also the suspect in the battery incident. He had been stabbed five times, Pattrick said.

The woman also was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of injuries, Pattrick said.

The conditions of the man and the woman were unavailable.

Flags fly at half-staff for officers’ memorial day

Flags flew at half-staff Wednesday outside government office buildings in honor of National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as the Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. The first national memorial service for the law enforcement profession, however, wasn’t until 1982 in Washington, D.C.

At 9 a.m. Friday, the Lawrence Police Department will conduct its annual memorial service at the police memorial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. has scheduled an open house from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday to honor its retiring director, Marceil Lauppe, and welcome its new director, Jan Jenkins. Jan Jenkins will be both Lauppe’s predecessor and successor.

Jenkins was the director of VNA from 1977 to 1980 before returning to Topeka to work with the United Methodist Homes and Aldersgate Village organization for the past 21 years.
