Lawrence trio earns Baker U. accolades

Awards recognize leadership in area

Three Lawrence residents will receive awards at Baker University’s Partners-In-Progress breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Drive.

Gene Meyer, president and chief executive officer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, will receive the Lawrence Businessperson of the Year Award.

Meyer oversees daily operations at the 173-bed hospital, which is owned by the city. Under his leadership since 1997, LMH has expanded its facilities to provide services in acute rehabilitation, geriatric mental health, open MRI and oncology.

Don Johnston, a consultant at Commerce Trust Company and former president of Maupintour, will be honored with the Outstanding Leadership and Achievement in Business Award.

He became corporate general manager of Maupintour in 1985 and president and part owner in 1993.

Retired business leader and civic activist Erv Hodges will receive a Special Civic Award. A native of Douglas County, he retired as a lieutenant colonel after 22 years with the U.S. Marines.

He has served as Lawrence’s mayor and on its city commission. He is a member of the Horizon Committee of Lawrence’s Sesquicentennial Committee and is founder and chairman of the Douglas County Memorial of Honor Foundation.

Jenee Armbrister, director of development at Baker, said the awards highlighted the men’s service to the community.

“We work with a lot of individuals, businesses and corporations in Lawrence, and every year we like to honor them for the wonderful things they do to help Baker as part of the Douglas County community,” she said.

The recipients were selected by the Partners-In-Progress selection committee, which is composed of Baker alumni who live and work in Douglas County and Baker President Dan Lambert.
