Insurance costs mount for city of Lecompton

Insurance for the city of Lecompton will jump more than 19 percent for 2002-2003.

Kent Grigg, of KG Insurance Inc. in Olathe, said the city’s premium would increase from $7,143 to $8,543. He said this was due in part to a building which came under the city’s control last year, but also general increases in insurance costs for municipalities.

Many companies are limiting their insurance for government agencies because school districts and big cities have been paying out a lot of insurance, Grigg said.

“As a whole in the industry itself, they’re going up,” he said of premiums. “It’s not unusual to see a 15 to 20 percent increase.”

Lecompton’s new city superintendent, Josh Hackathorn, began work on March 11, replacing Dusty Dark, who was superintendent for about two years.

Hackathorn, 23, previously worked detailing cars in Lawrence.

The superintendent is in charge of the water plant, reading water meters, mowing, road work, snow plowing and sewage lagoons.

The council gave $100 to the Lecompton Easter Egg Hunt.
