Junior high students to meet with lawmakers

West Junior High School students will meet today with members of Douglas County’s legislative delegation to express concern about possible budget cuts and fee increases in the Lawrence school district.

Sen. Sandy Praeger and Rep. Barbara Ballard, both of Lawrence, and Rep. Ralph Tanner of Baldwin are scheduled to meet with about 10 students in Topeka.

Students will present findings of their survey of 358 West eighth- and ninth-graders. That survey says:

l Eighty-four percent of students with a 4.0 grade point average participate in one or more extracurricular activities. The district is contemplating a pay-to-participate fee for activities, which some say will cut participation and lead to a decline in academic performance.

l Eighty percent object to a proposal to dismantle sophomore sports programs, because it would limit opportunity to be involved in high school athletics.

l Thirty-one percent believe their parents would support tax increases to keep school class sizes down.
