Faithful to history

To the editor:

My hat is off to Steve Jansen for asserting his integrity as a historian when the television crew from CBS recently came to interview him at the Watkins Community Museum of History. They had come with a preconceived notion that the fighting attitude between KU and MU in their upcoming basketball game in the sports arena was an outgrowth of the attack on Lawrence by the Missouri ruffian, William Quantrill, on Aug. 21, 1863. In spite of their cajoling, he refused to lend any support whatsoever to their false premise. It would have been a good news story and would have given him some interesting TV exposure, but he stuck to his guns and remained an honest historian.
