Fixed incomes

To the editor:

In reference to David Reber’s letter of June 18 on teacher’s pay, I make these comments:

1. I am not anti-education. However, the educational activists continue to preach there are always insufficient funds to educate our children. The thought of economizing and reducing wasteful dollars doesn’t seem to be the politically correct approach.

2. Retired senior citizens living on a fixed or, in some cases, a dwindling income have the very same increasing expenses as the teachers. While teachers negotiate yearly on raises, senior citizens are unable to approach their pension fund managers to obtain raises. Sure, Social Security gives yearly increases (2 percent for this year) which amounted to a net of $30 per month in our case. This $360 for the year will not cover our increase in property taxes.
