Listen to generals

To the editor:

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a war in Iraq might provoke just the disaster it would try to avert. President Bush has said that he would pursue “all options” to prevent Saddam Hussein from using weapons of mass destruction, but an attack on Baghdad could push him to do just that. The military’s top personnel say that, in a pinch, Hussein might pull out all the stops and use biological and chemical weapons against U.S. troops. If the president wants to protect Americans, he would do well to listen to his generals, who have predicted that a war in Iraq would only increase the danger to U.S. citizens.
